Throughout the Indian culture, women based their worth on the artistry they could produce. They would decorate a wide variety of items for their family and for trading.
Some tribes, such as the Cheyenne, considered a woman's creativity as prized as a warriors' achievements. Most Indian women however, would paint mostly abstract or geometric designs. Traditionally, the men painted the animals.
The deer hide parfleche was the "suitcase" of the Plains Indians. Traditionally, the "parfleche" was painted with geometric designs. Many of Zona's designs are inspired by the parfleche.
